Narrowing the gap between rich and poor must involve schools, families and communities
A new report released Monday 3 September 2007 by the National Children's Bureau, Family and Parenting Institute, and the Institute of Education sets out new ideas of how we can 'narrow the gap' between rich and poor.

Back to school
The Joseph Rowntree Foundation has recently published a series of reports on children's experiences of poverty and educational disadvantage, including education for those permanently excluded from school.

For children excluded from school parents will now be required to keep pupils under supervision for the first five days of an exclusion or face a fine of up to £100.

Meanwhile the Citizen's Advice Bureau continues to highlight the issue of the cost of school uniforms and school trips.

REACH group reports on raising the aspirations of black boys and young men
The report, commissioned by the Department for Communities and Local Government, recommends that the Government should introduce a structured national role model programme for Black boys and young Black men.

This month's digest includes a series of literature reviews from the Joseph Rowntree Foundation on aspects of parenting, a study of the environmental impacts on children's wellbeing and reports on advertising to children.

The National Academy for Parenting Practitioners
The Academy is due to launch in late October and is about to begin its research programme looking at what works in parenting services. Findings will directly inform training and policy, to ensure that parenting support in England is world class.Money markets – their effect on family life
