1. News

Narrowing the gap between rich and poor must involve schools, families and communities

A new report released Monday 3 September 2007 by the National Children's Bureau, Family and Parenting Institute, and the Institute of Education sets out new ideas of how we can 'narrow the gap' between rich and poor.

The Joseph Rowntree Foundation has recently published a series of reports on children's experiences of poverty and educational disadvantage, including education for those permanently excluded from school.

For children excluded from school parents will now be required to keep pupils under supervision for the first five days of an exclusion or face a fine of up to £100.

Meanwhile the Citizen's Advice Bureau continues to highlight the issue of the cost of school uniforms and school trips.

REACH group reports on raising the aspirations of black boys and young men

The report, commissioned by the Department for Communities and Local Government, recommends that the Government should introduce a structured national role model programme for Black boys and young Black men.

2. Digest

This month's digest includes a series of literature reviews from the Joseph Rowntree Foundation on aspects of parenting, a study of the environmental impacts on children's wellbeing and reports on advertising to children.
Items from all Family Policy Digests can now be found through the improved search engine on the website, with keywords at the end of each item linking to related items in previous months.

3. Horizon scan

 

Future FPI publications

 

  • A new report on the Parenting Fund is in preparation. A summary of the report will be produced in time for Parents' Week which begins 15 October 2007. In 2006, a second round of the Parenting Fund awarded £14m to 131 projects. The focus has been widened to include work with the whole family, teenagers, couples and aspects of the "Respect" agenda.
  • Coming soon - Dr Helen Barrett's new report on voluntary and community sector organisations working with 'hard to reach' families.

    The National Academy for Parenting Practitioners

    The Academy is due to launch in late October and is about to begin its research programme looking at what works in parenting services. Findings will directly inform training and policy, to ensure that parenting support in England is world class.

    Confidence and confidentiality: Openness in family courts a new approach

    This is the second consultation on improving openness in family courts. This paper sets out what the Ministry is taking forward from the last consultation, and seeks views on new proposals to improve the openness in family courts.

    In work, better off: next steps to full employment

    This Green Paper on welfare reform proposes that from October 2008, lone parents with a youngest child aged 12 or over will no longer be entitled to Income Support solely on the grounds of being a lone parent and would have to transfer to Jobseeker's Allowance.
