Set up as a charity in 1997, Rainer runs over 60 projects nationally working with over 12,000 young people every year to provide them with the emotional and practical support needed to lead secure and fulfilled lives. Our focus is on
- supported accommodation
- learning and employability
- offending
- supporting young people and their families.
Our Parenting Fund project in Slough is developing a replicable model of support for parents caring for older children and teenagers who display challenging behaviour. We will pilot a model of early intervention that works with parents and their children to facilitate communication, develop monitoring and supervision, reduce conflict and strengthen relationships. Through the project we expect parents to have a knowledge and understanding of their children and be able to challenge their behaviour in a supportive way.
Parents of teenagers who are deemed to be at risk of social exclusion will be targeted with both crisis support as well as an offer of long-term intervention. A parents' worker will assess parents and run groups workshops to identify the support needed. Sources of conflict and gaps in parental knowledge and skills will be explored and a support programme will be designed around parents' needs. We expect it to combine a group-based course, a parental support forum and individual support.
We expect our service to mirror the support offered to the parents' children by Slough Youth Support Services. Events will be run to bring young people and parents together. These will combine group activities that explore sources of conflict with informal activities aimed at building bridges between parents and their children.
