Positive Parenting is a national charity with thirty years experience in support of parents and those who work with them. We work in three ways to offer:
- Publications covering parenting courses and advice and information for parents.
- Training to voluntary and statutory groups.
- Parenting course delivery using trained volunteers.
We are using the Parenting Fund to offer the new 'Training for work with parents' course at a specially subsidised rate. The course is based on a core curriculum developed by the Parenting Education & Support Forum (PESF) and incorporates the new National Occupational Standards for working with parents.
This is an excellent opportunity for those working with parents to gain a nationally accredited qualification.
The course consists of 6 units, which will be delivered in blocks of three or four days between February 2005 and March 2006.
The range of topics covered by the course includes: authentic partnership working, family diversity, parents as adult learners, theories of human development, group dynamics, facilitator skills, the changing relationship between parent and child/young person, the needs of both parents and children, behaviour management, communication skills, assessment methods and tools and strategies for support. There is also an opportunity for personal development and peer feedback.
As part of the training programme, trainees will be required to co-facilitate a parenting group. A project partner, Parentalk, will deliver a Parenting Event in each of the four project regions to promote these groups to parents.
