Nacro is the leading national crime reduction charity working with disadvantaged communities and people to address the issues that can lead to crime and anti social behaviour. We were set up in 1966.
In Peterborough we are running a 'Young Mums to Be' programme for teenage expectant mothers to prepare them for motherhood. The Parenting Fund grant allows us to expand this programme to provide for more young women. The project is part of the Peterborough teenage pregnancy strategy and has the support of all our partners, including Connexions, the Maternity Hospital and Peterborough City Council.
The course has 12 modules:
- Health & Safety
- Biological Awareness
- IT Skills
- Self-Awareness
- Creative Skills
- Money Management
- Baby Care
- Communication
- Healthy Lifestyle
- Life Skills
- Training, Education & Work
- Future Planning
The course lasts 16 weeks with the girls attending the training centre for an average of 16 hours per week. Participants gain an accredited 'Young Mums to Be' qualification equivalent to an NVQ at Level 1. During the course participants receive support and guidance from our in-house 'Skills for Life' and Vocational trainers. Our resources include: sterilising units, baths, 'live' baby dolls for practice, healthy living promotion materials, internet access, a study area and a kitchen.
Group sizes are kept to a maximum of eight to allow sufficient time to be spent with each young person. The sessions include visits by external professionals such as Health Visitors, Family Planning, Connexions Advisers, Under 18's Midwives, Police and Social Services.
