Life Education Centres West Midlands (LECWM) is primarily a health education and drug prevention programme. We work with children aged 3 - 11 years in school and nursery helping them to gain the knowledge, skills and confidence to make healthy, informed choices. We are a charity and were set up in 1992.
Our Parenting Fund project will work with parents/carers in wards with a high proportion of black and ethnic minority parents. We want parents to develop the knowledge, skills and confidence to be effective and confident in their role. To this end, parents will be offered a seven-week programme of workshops covering behaviour management, children's health and well-being, stress management, drug awareness and aromatherapy. During the workshops participants will be encouraged to put as much effort into looking after themselves as they do in looking after their children.
The funding will also allow us to run Assembly Programmes in local schools, primarily with Year 1 pupils, and attended by parents. Facilitators run a one-hour information session on issues such as diet, sleep and common behavioural problems at mealtimes and bedtimes. The parents and children then take part in a shared learning workshop.
Altogether the Parenting Fund will cover the delivery of 24 seven-week workshops, 21 Assembly Programmes, interpreting costs and the translation of our Parents' Handbook into three community languages.
