The Lancashire Council of Mosques is a charity established in 1989 to promote the aspirations on the Muslim community in Lancashire and to empower them to interact on an equal basis with the indigenous population of the county. Our activities include awareness training for the police, mosque visits by schools and a range of inter-faith work.
Our Parenting Fund project will provide support to Muslims who experience significant challenges in their role as parents. The service users will be largely of Pakistani, Bangladeshi and Indian ethnicity. The difficulties they face could include children with a disability, children who misuse drugs or alcohol, children in poor health, children with mental health problems, challenging behaviour or poor academic achievement.
Support will also be extended to parents who have a disability, or are drug or alcohol misusers, have poor health or mental health problems.
Our aims are to:
- Increase parents' confidence and skills in supporting their children.
- Reduce the number of children placed on the Child Protection Register.
- Build more cohesive families.
- Enhance educational attainment.
The male and female project workers will work with groups of their own gender to address issues that cannot be discussed comfortably in mixed sessions. The project will work in a range of settings and respect parents' privacy. Strong links will be developed with statutory and voluntary services. The Parent Support Worker will advocate, arrange appointments and accompany parents to agency meetings. Interpreting services will be provided where necessary.
Our Parental Support Workers have a good understanding of the needs of vulnerable parents and are able to work with mainstream services. Each worker will support a caseload of parents, through home visits, one-to-one sessions and small group work. The support parents receive will vary according to need.
