KIDS is a national charity that has been delivering services since 1970 to families whose children have disabilities and/or special educational needs.
Many of the families we work with find our service invaluable, but they often need more support than can be provided. The Parenting Fund project will allow KIDS to consolidate and enhance its work with parents and carers.
We will recruit a Parent Progression Worker who will work with the KIDS staff currently delivering services to families. She/he will draw parents and carers together and enable them to develop their skills, learn from each other and recognise their needs. Our aim is to empower parents/carers using parent to parent forums.
The Parent Progression Worker will use our recently developed fully accessible training facilities and sensory room to work with other staff to provide workshops and forums for parents and carers. Participants will be able to select from a wide choice of workshops covering topics such as: confidence building, managing challenging behaviour, legislation, supporting transition, and understanding direct payments.
A crèche will be available in the sensory room for the children of workshop participants. Parents can play with their children here if they wish.
We will encourage parents / carers to take up other sources of help, advice and social opportunities, e.g. family support services, childcare, housing and finance and play and leisure services.
