The Great Yarmouth Community Trust is a charity set up in 2001 as the successor body to the local Sure Start programme. We provide a range of services including childcare, family support, adult learning and research over three sites.
Our Parenting Fund project is to develop a parenting support strategy in Great Yarmouth. Since early 2004 a local working group from both the voluntary and statutory sectors has been working on the plan. They recognise the need for a better co-ordination of services for parents and for accurate and accessible information about the services available. Partnership working and the pooling of resources are seen as critical to the success of the strategy.
The Parenting Fund is being used to appoint a Co-ordinator to carry the strategy forward and support the Working Group. The bid was made on behalf of the Working Group by Gt Yarmouth Community Trust and the Ormiston Children and Families Trust.
The project will:
- set up a Steering Group to direct the work of the Co-ordinator
- review current activity across our local area identifying services, gaps in provision and possible areas of duplication
- review the countywide picture to ensure local developments take account and are informed by broader developments such as Every Child Matters
- consult with families on what services would benefit them as parents and carers
- facilitate focus groups for professionals and families to share ideas on the development of a Parenting Strategy for the Borough
- develop an IT strategy to provide Information Points on parenting education and support services and on line booking for Parenting Programmes
- widen access to services
- develop a Training Strategy that will include quality standards for those involved in delivering parenting education in the Borough
- carry out an independent evaluation of the project followed by a final report and conference. These will disseminate information on best practice and consider the future for parenting education at a local, county and national level.
