Alcohol Concern is a national charity working with alcohol misuse. We work to reduce the incidence and costs of alcohol related harm and to increase the range and quality of services available to people with alcohol-related problems. We were established in 1984.
We are using our Parenting Fund grant to protect and improve the quality of life and opportunities of children parented by alcohol mis-users. We have two aims:
- To strengthen the capacity of specialist alcohol treatment services to support clients who are parents, enabling them to develop their parenting skills.
- To develop the capacity of parenting professionals to work with parents who have alcohol-related problems.
There are two components of this work: training and policy work:
Training
We will provide 'Champion Training' programmes directed at both alcohol workers and parenting professionals. Through these programmes alcohol workers and parenting professionals will train each other. This will be done by:
- developing training materials to enable alcohol treatment services to work more effectively with parents
- developing training materials to enable parenting professionals to work more effectively with drinking parents
- piloting and promoting the training modules via a 'Champion Trainer' programme in alcohol treatment services and among parenting professionals.
Policy work
We will influence policy reform in this area by:
- producing briefings for alcohol treatment services and their commissioners promoting parenting work and encouraging these services to engage fully with mainstream parenting professionals
- producing briefings for parenting professionals and their commissioners that promote alcohol work and which encourage parenting professionals to engage with alcohol treatment services
- providing a resource base and consultancy for professionals working with parents affected by alcohol problems
- producing good practice guidance that draws together Child Protection, alcohol-related issues and Social Services delivery.
