Groundwork Thames Valley is a charity that is one of 50 Ground work Trusts forming part of the Groundwork Federation throughout England, Wales and Northern Ireland. We were established in 1987 and we work with our local partners to improve the quality of the local environment, the lives of local people and the success of local businesses in areas of high need.

The Parenting Fund project is set in Stoke, one of Slough's most deprived areas. Drug misuse is frequent among young people in the area and PARENTAID will enable parents to deal with the effects of drug-dependent young people within the home. They will learn to recognise the signs and discover a calm but appropriate response.

We have employed a 'Positive Parenting Co-ordinator' for this project. She will recruit a minimum of twelve parent volunteers for us to consult about parents needs. Their views and experiences will be used to develop the service.

Once up and running, the project will offer:

  • workshops for parents that will help them to respond successfully to the challenges faced at home and in the community from children and young people. The sessions will be issue based and include art and horticulture as a way for parents to articulate their thoughts and feelings. This may lead to local exhibitions
  • a monthly facilitated parent support group. This will help parents realise they are not alone and help them to encourage and motivate each other
  • links with other parenting co-ordinators to ensure Manor Park parents can reach the services they need. These include: outreach workers, Family Health Activist Team, The Children's Service, Educational Psychologists, the Healthy Schools Co-ordinator and William Penn School.

Our long-term goal is to enable parents to set up Manor Park PARENTAID as a charity to carry on work once the Parenting Fund is finished.
