For over 56 years, the charity fsu has developed pioneering ways of reaching out to vulnerable families by providing culturally appropriate support and emphasising one-to-one work. The wide range of communities and cultures that we work with demonstrates our success in reaching out to people reluctant to engage with mainstream organisations.
This project will develop the parenting skills of parents for whom English is not their first language. Some non-English speaking families will have suffered great stress prior to their settlement in Liverpool. Others will find settlement in a different environment brings unexpected challenges. The Project will enable parents to develop ways of parenting which take into account their changing life-styles. It is known to be harder for children from non-English speaking families to achieve successful outcomes in their lives. We want to help parents give their children the same life-chances as their English speaking peers.
Fully trained, and supported, Parent Support Workers will provide the service. Where possible, staff will have the same linguistic and cultural background as the service users. This will help them to recognise the cultural and religious barriers that many non-English speaking parents experience as their children are assimilated into Liverpool's culture and life.
Most of the work will be 'one to one'. The support workers will devise a work plan with the parents based on individual goals and targets. Group work and parenting skills classes will also be provided. These groups may be single language groups, single sex groups, or both.
