For over 56 years, the charity fsu has developed pioneering ways of reaching out to vulnerable families by providing culturally appropriate support and emphasising one-to-one work. The wide range of communities and cultures that we work with demonstrates our success in reaching out to people reluctant to engage with mainstream organisations.
During the project, fsu will use its experience to produce an evidence-based information and training pack for supporting parenting work within different communities. It will be disseminated throughout fsu and some of the grass roots organisations with whom we are in partnership. We expect the project to include work in schools, colleges and the health service. It will highlight issues that challenge parents and give organisations the tools to deliver an effective model of parenting support.
fsu's Parenting Model
The project will be built on our parenting model. fsu employs a person-centred and holistic approach that focuses on the person's attributes rather than deficits. It recognises the numerous influences on a family, including culture, background, life experience, relationships, school and community. We have developed three key messages for successful parenting support for the most vulnerable families. These are:
- Parenting Support is best delivered by meeting the needs of the whole family.
- Improving parenting needs a flexible approach that starts with families' strengths and builds on their abilities.
- Engaging the most disadvantaged families takes additional time and energy.
