After Adoption is a national charity that provides support services to people whose lives have been affected by adoption. We were established in 1990 and began work in Newcastle in 2004.
Our Parenting Fund project will provide adoptive parents in Newcastle with training and support packages to help them cope with difficulties that might arise within their families. The packages consist of workshops, groups and information packs.
Parenting adopted children can be additionally challenging because of the difficulty these youngsters sometimes have in forming relationships and bonding with their adoptive parents. The reasons for this are varied, sometimes the children involved have suffered physical, mental or sexual abuse before being adopted, whilst others have experienced several moves to different carers in their young lives.
A lack of consistent parental care can cause problems in the adoptive family. Our experience has shown that adoptive parents often need help in understanding why their children behave as they do, and look for support to prevent distress or arguments breaking out at home. This project will give parents the guidance, support and practical tools they need to deal with these difficulties. The long term aim is to assist parents in continuing to enable children to grow and develop within their adoptive families.
