WILD Young Parents Project is a learning and development charity for young mums and their children. WILD aims to provide young mums and their children with opportunities to develop their skills, improve their self-esteem, make positive and healthy choices, protect themselves, participate as equal members of their communities and achieve their potential. WILD offers groupwork, projects and events, including groupwork, arts, sports, health issues and accreditation. WILD was started by young mums in 1992, and now works across the county of Cornwall, in partnership with health, education and family support services.
WILD Positive Relationships project has been designed to improve the self-esteem, emotional resilience and community involvement of young mothers and their children who are experiencing domestic conflict. Compared with other families, young parents and their children experience higher levels of multiple deprivation and domestic abuse. After consultation with 60 young mums, the project will recruit and train 15 peer leaders to design resources and facilitate parenting workshops on positive relationships and domestic abuse, and intergenerational family activities to promote attachment, to 100 young mums and their children.Outreach and advocacy will also take place for 36 'harder to reach' families. In the second year, peer leaders will run a seminar for professionals, and the project team will look at sustainability issues.
