Around 50% of parents with learning difficulties have their children removed for adoption. Research shows that removals are both unnecessary and deeply damaging to the emotional health of parents and children.
Funding from the DCSF Parenting Fund is enabling Speaking Up to establish an advocacy service for parents with learning difficulties and/or mental ill health In Peterborough. The Speaking Up for Families advocate will ensure that parents understand their legal and human rights in relation to parenting, and that they are aware of the full range of support services available to them.
The advocate will provide pro-active 1-to-1 advocacy to 30 parents with learning difficulties each year, and provide crisis advocacy to parents facing issues with parenting or having their parental rights threatened. The project will also share learning and practice through its seminar and workshops to promote long term changes benefiting parents.
