The Family Rights Group advises and supports families whose children are involved with social services. We are a charity and we were set up in 1974.
The Fathers project will explore and help dismantle the barriers encountered by fathers and paternal relatives whose children are involved with social services by focusing on two areas:
Developing appropriate information, and advice materials to improve the way fathers are informed, involved and supported by voluntary and statutory sector professionals to carry out their parenting role.
Identifying steps that could be taken within the administrative and legal systems to support the safe involvement of fathers with their children.
We will:
- host a discussion board for family members and a notice board for professionals, as well as pilot models of best practice
- hold a conference and produce pamphlets and articles aimed at professionals, academics and families on why and how to engage with fathers
- publish information and advice leaflets for fathers on rights and how to get support. These will be written and formatted to fit black and minority ethnic groups, teenagers (including care leavers), and fathers with special needs
- produce practical information and advice sheets for mothers and other relatives, friends or carers on ways to involve non-resident fathers in the child's life. This includes fathers who have lost contact with their children or who have difficulties finding their place within the family
- publish information and advice leaflets for practitioners on best practice for informing, involving and supporting fathers in cases that affect their children.
