Our main objectives are to:
1. Continue our direct work with non-English speaking single parents in Manchester who face severe social exclusion and disadvantage through working with 3 local partners to deliver a programme of culturally appropriate training events. The training topics have been, and will continue to be, identified in focus groups from each culture. We will work with our partner organisations to access severely unintegrated single parents from Somali, Bangladeshi, and Eastern European origins. We will train 6 new trainers, 80 single parents, and work with 12 single parents on a Somali Forum; reach 500 non-English speaking single parents via our audio cd factsheets; and take 100 advice calls via Language Line. The programme will also offer opportunities for social interaction, and the development of mutual support networks. We will work towards getting our training accredited.
2. Further the development of our support infrastructure for hard-to-reach single parents through a partners and beneficiaries steering group. We will also facilitate the set up and development of a Forum for Somali women to build confidence, identify role models and most importantly give them a voice for the first time in Manchester. We will provide training to partners' staff and volunteers, as required, to build their knowledge & skills in dealing with the multiple issues faced by single parents. OPF|GB will offer ongoing information, advice and support and continue our ongoing discussions about supporting the set up of a telephone helpline for BME parents.
