NSPCC-Grimsby Family Support Service
The aim of the NSPCC is to see a society where all children are loved, valued and able to fulfil their potential. The Grimsby Family Support Service works with families experiencing domestic violence, abuse and neglect, parental substance misuse, communication, attachment and bonding issues. Our main focus for this project however will be families where domestic abuse is a primary concern and families who have children in the 5 – 13 age range.
The aims of the project are to:
- Prevent families from reaching the point of breakdown
- Prevent children from being put at risk of harm
- Further develop a way of working to bring the whole family together and focus on the strengths of parents as well as behaviours which need to change.
These aims will be delivered through Video Interactive Guidance which involves:
- Specialist and resource intensive one to one counselling and support to families. Short clips of video film of the family interacting in their own home will be used to facilitate discussion about interaction and communication
- Identifying what already works within the family and building upon this, to replace what is currently not working, helping the families determine their own goals. Parents are guided to find their own solutions and build on the strengths they can see in the film, rather than being told what to do.
Each case can take 10 months to 1 year to complete through the Video Interaction Guidance. We will aim to work with 50 families throughout the duration of the grant. These families will be referred through universal services including social care.
