The National Autistic Society was founded in 1962, by a group of parents who were passionate about ensuring a better future for their children. Today we are the UK's leading charity for people affected by autism; however, our aim remains the same.
Today, we have over 18,000 members, 80 branches and provide a wide range of advice, information, support and specialist services to 100,000 individuals each year.
The Parenting Fund is supporting the Autism Support Greenwich project and has enabled the recruitment of a second Family Support Worker. The project provides families affected by autism with one to one advice and support, home visits, and signposting to appropriate local agencies and autism-specific workshops, thereby supporting over 100 parents and carers per year. It also reaches many more parents through regular newsletters, parent meetings, workshops and social events. The additional Family Support Worker will address the current waiting list of around 25 families needing the project's services. They will also share the caseload, expand the service, start a Siblings Group and reach families with complex and multiple needs; whilst also helping to build strong links with both the Primary Care Trust and Greenwich Council.
