The PiPa Project (Parents in Partnership advancing…inclusion)
Need for services
68% of Bristol's disabled children live in South Bristol. 86% of these children mainly meet the criteria for Emotional Behavioural Difficulties (EBD) and live in the most deprived area in Bristol and among the poorest 10% in England. (Bristol City Council State of the Neighbourhoods 2008).
In the current economic climate, parents of disabled children with EBD are concerned about benefit changes; they asked PiPa Workers for support with this. This group of parents often receive the lower rate Disability Living Allowance (Care component) and will lose their right to Income Support, therefore making them eligible for work.
PiPa Work Programme April 09 – March 11
We will provide a first steps employment course 'Parents Time for Change' in South Bristol and also develop and provide this service in North Bristol.
We will run 2 courses annually with 10 participants receiving 12 X 2 hour sessions. Course content includes: Recognising and Finding Solutions to Employment, Identifying Barriers to Work, Completing Application Forms, Communication Skills and Interview Techniques.
We will also provide an intensive support service to 20 parents around barriers to employment. This would include help with benefit forms, reading official documentation for them and help with understanding of the same.
We will support them to find and access quality childcare provision or signpost to Information Advice & Guidance and progression to further training including National Vocational Qualifications.
We will recruit parents by holding engagement workshops in schools and community venues. Engaging 30 families of which 10 will take up Parents Time for Change; others will be signposted to other training or intensive support for their issues.
