Our aims and objectives are as follows: -
1. the provision of therapeutic, educational and stimulating toys and equipment for children and young people with special needs
2. promoting play and recreation as a means to develop children and young people with disabilities
3. encouraging the development of self-advocacy skills amongst disabled children and young people and their parents/carers
4. educating parents and carers in the skills and knowledge they need to support and develop their children
5. educating the general public in matters relating to disability and the development needs of children and young people with special needs.
In this Greenwich Toy and Leisure Library Association's 36th year we will be launching through the Parenting Fund an exciting new extension to our parent support project through the appointment of a Special Needs Family Support worker who will undertake extensive outreach to those hard to reach families with disabled children, which have traditionally failed to access local services and provision, using a well established network of local neighbourhood toy libraries, children's centres, schools, community projects and voluntary and charitable organisations. We also plan to deliver a series of parent workshops on a range of topics and therapies designed to inform and enhance the role of parent/carer. Operating, as we do, in a diverse multicultural borough where over 150 different languages are spoken, we intend to target BAME groups, parents/carers who are disabled, those with mental health problems, lone parents and the unemployed; we will be promoting the services and support available through toy library, and, where appropriate, signposting families on to other projects in the statutory and voluntary sector and we hope in doing so to make a significant difference in this the year of 'Aiming High for the Disabled Child.'
