Title: Young Fathers Parenting Project
Fairbridge engages with young people aged 13-25 by providing a combination of holistic support, personal and social skills development through challenging activities and self evaluation. These aim to equip young people with the confidence, motivation and necessary life skills which enable them to make a positive contribution to mainstream society. Many of these young people have multiple needs which include growing up from impoverished and disadvantaged backgrounds contributing to long term unemployment, homelessness, mental illness, addiction to drugs and/or alcohol and criminal behaviour. Using established engagement techniques as listed below we tackle the attitudes and behaviours that create barriers and impacts on developing and maintaining positive relationships:
- One to one support
- Regular residential activities
- Mentoring Projects
- Showcasing Events
- Youth Forums
- "Moving On" Support
- Accredited activities around; employability skills, independent living, community, recreation and personal and social skills.
Fairbridge will pilot a programme that concentrates on engaging 20 young men each year, aged 16 to 25, who are either absent, estranged or struggling to build positive relationships with their child/children or step child/children because of their choices and chaotic lifestyles. The young men will take part in an initial intensive programme based on our induction programme, which has a residential element. The majority will not identify or accept that their choices or behaviours are preventing them from being positive fathers and through our engagement and self evaluation techniques we will begin to identify areas of need and plan for change.
