Project Summary
Disability Croydon exists to offer information, advice and support to disabled people and their families, living in the London Borough of Croydon, on all issues which affect their lives. We aim to:
- Eliminate barriers and empower disabled people to participate fully in society within the social model of disability
- Increase awareness of disability issues among non-disabled people and organisations.
The Disabled Parents Advocacy Project aims to support families where one or both parents have disabilities/impairments which impact on family life and/or relationships. The beneficiaries will be disabled people with parenting responsibilities, living within the London Borough of Croydon. No statistics are collected specifically about this group, however it is estimated that there are 2.1 million disabled parents nationally. Based on census information we have estimated that there must be at least 4,468 disabled parents in the borough.* Additionally, we have anecdotal evidence from our Advocacy Service and Direct Payments services, concerning unmet needs of disabled parents, where our intervention has been able to prevent poor outcomes for disabled parents and their children. At present we are aware of at least 20 disabled parents who have approached us for support, this is prior to the project being publicised.
