The Cornwall Dyslexia Association's (CDA) Parent Support Project
The CDA aims to support the needs of dyslexic children and young people in education, and adults in the workplace. To achieve this we raise public and professional awareness of dyslexia, and campaign for appropriate provision for dyslexics in local schools and colleges and appropriate support in the employment sector.
The CDA Parent Support Project aims to hold a target of 56 courses over two years for parent and carers, (and teachers and support workers) to help them better understand and support the needs of dyslexic children. (The project hopes to attract between 12 and 18 participants per course and will place an emphasis on encouraging fathers to attend.) The courses consist of a series of five workshops (one including children) which aim to increase understanding of dyslexia (helping to reduce anxiety, confusion and negative expectations) and to build confidence, knowledge and skills required to develop self-esteem along with literacy / numeracy skills. They explore practical solutions; provide a wide range of free resources and advice and present opportunities to share experience and strategies to support individual needs. In addition the project aims to help promote better communication between home and school through an understanding of the SEN Code of Practice and the exploration of practical ways relationships between home and school can be developed.
