The aims of CARE ( Christian Action Resource Enterprise) are to" Relieve poverty, hardship and distress".
The project is called "CARE-Parenting" and the aim is to "equip parents in NE Lincs in the task of parenting"- this is largely done through parenting courses but occasionally with more hard to reach groups in the home.
We work primarily in the field of homelessness therefore have a bias to those groups that demonstrate poor parenting practices as a result of poverty, hardship and distress, although courses are generic and suited to all parenting issues from the whole spectrum of socio-economic backgrounds.
- CARE will develop Parentalk's variety of parenting courses to meet the varying needs of our disadvantaged service users as follows:
- 12 courses for parents of children under 11years for 72 beneficiaries
- 3 courses for parents of teenagers for 18 beneficiaries
- 6 courses for parents of children with special needs and disabilities for 36 beneficiaries
- 3 courses for fathers for 18 beneficiaries
- All of the existing courses will be adapted to meet the needs of the service users and with particular emphasis on those vulnerable homeless or previously homeless families i.e. content, number of sessions, time of day and place.
- We also intend to continue some transitions sessions, under three headings:
- 3 single sessions for parents of children starting primary school for 18 beneficiaries
- 3 single sessions for parents of children starting secondary school for 18 beneficiaries (we have previously delivered the "Moving up "course for parents of children starting senior school and found that parents were not so keen to attend more than one session, therefore have reduced this to two hours.)
- 3 single sessions for families with step children for 18 beneficiaries. This is due to the parents' demand and may be added to an existing course or as a single session or used as a taster session to encourage parents to attend a course.
- CARE aim to recruit parents mainly through existing service users who are vulnerable and disadvantaged. Although they provide services to around 350 homeless/threatened with homelessness families annually they have access to many hundreds others as they have to decline assistance due to the lack of homes available in the social sector. On average, through the life of the project ,we expect to visit 100 recently homeless families with support needs, twice each, when we will accompany CARE's support workers and build a relationship with the service user and encourage them to attend one of the courses we offer. This work will ensure we are meeting the needs of the most vulnerable families, many of whom are struggling to manage their children's behaviour. Using this method of intervention and support we hope to give parents strategies which reduce the amount of anti-social behaviour and teenage pregnancies in NE Lincs. We also underline a child's need for good self esteem and look at ways parents can practically achieve this. So, giving a child the confidence to deal with peer pressure and bullying and reduce the chances of mental illness when they become adults.
- We will also advertise the courses to health and children's services professionals using the intranet, as well as voluntary sector agencies such as Face to Face and Homestart. We also intend to work in partnership with the newly appointed parent support workers in NELincs.
