'Being Dad' will promote active and positive fatherhood in the African Caribbean community in Southwark, one of the largest ethnic groups in the borough. Research shows children thrive are happier and healthier, when fathers play a full role – 41% of dependent children were living in one parent families at the 2001 Census, 10% in step families, 'Southwark Children and Young Peoples Plan 2008 - 9'
Achieved through a structured program of activities incorporating the arts, as well as, formal training (to reach and engage different learning styles), 'Being Dad' offers;
- Varied weekly interactive and educational play sessions for fathers and their children
- Accredited African Caribbean Fatherhood Parenting Program for fathers
- Accredited workforce development training around fatherhood
- Community engagement events celebrating the unique gifts fathers bring to parenting.
As a specific focus 40% of the fathers 'Being Dad' aims to work with will be new, young and expectant fathers. Working strategically from this position we will offer interagency training to: midwives, teachers, teenage pregnancy workers, early years practitioners, extended services and health visitors, using our fatherhood training program.
Other groups of fathers include lone parent fathers, non resident fathers, the fathers of young children and fathers wishing to increase their parenting capacity.
We have the organisational depth to deliver 'Being Dad' a proven model of engagement, trained sessional workers and volunteers. 'Being Dad' will importantly also support Southwark's CYPP and safeguarding strategies.
'Being Dad' will have contact with:
250 fathers including children and families
240 practitioners
