Barnardo's believes in children, no matter who they are, what they have done or what they have been through. Our aim is to make sure that every child has the chance to reach their full potential, whatever their life circumstances. We support the vulnerable, the forgotten, the neglected and the abused and we work with them to bring out the best in each and every one.
Barnardo's Gregory's Place provides services to promote the wellbeing of children, young people and families who are living with or affected by HIV; we work with children and young people who are refugee and asylum seekers and we provide support for children and young people who are at risk through trafficking. The service works with families across Greater Manchester and Lancashire from it's base in central Manchester. Gregory's Place offers a range of centre based services that are complemented by outreach activities. We aim to support the whole family through the provision of support including parenting programmes delivered by appropriately trained professionals.
Barnardo's has strong partnership links with the George House Trust and the Chinese Community centre, for the purpose of this project we will be working closely together to offer support and services to families.
Overview and Aims of the Project:
The project will provide an inclusive parenting support programme for refugee and asylum seeking families, families affected by HIV and those from the Chinese Community. We will offer a range of parenting groups, workshops and accredited programmes with the aim of sharing knowledge and information, increasing skills and self esteem and fostering peer support to enable parents and children to enjoy family life and parents to meet the needs of their children.
How the work will be delivered:
The project will be delivered through:
- Workshops for parents who take their children to language classes at the Chinese Centre. This will be the first stage in becoming ready for more formal parenting programmes
- Delivery of a range of parent groups and accredited parenting programmes by facilitators who speak community languages including Cantonese
- Provision of child care for the children of parents attending groups
- Advocacy, mentoring and support to families with the aim of enabling parents to access mainstream services in their own communities
Who will benefit:
The project will benefit families already engaged with the partner organisations involved with delivering this project. These families are from the African and Chinese communities and many service users are refugee and asylum seekers or are living with or affected by HIV.
