We will be using the grant to build on our highly successful Dads R Us Project in which we have used community development methods to engage with dads/male carers, we intend to expand our work of supporting Dads in their parenting role, across the whole of Derby city. This will be done at a practical and strategic level and there will be three complementary standards to the work.
Strategic influence [/] The direct work we do will provide us with evidence to provide training and strategic influence across the city and at the Parenting Commission Board. We will establish a dads Forum to give dads and male carers across the city a voice.
Recruit "Champion Dads" Using Barnardo's registration, vetting and training scheme for these volunteer Champion Dads – working out progression routes for their own training into community development and childcare courses. We will recruit dads on a rolling program during the project. They will encourage positive male parenting to promote children's learning and development and challenge limiting male social norms by:
- Buddy support new dads into existing services
- Organise low cost city wide family events to encourage peer support
- Encourage and facilitate dads and kids positive play sessions/events
- Role model positive father engagement
Direct work with Parents and Children We will continue to deliver a regular program directly to dads/male carers and children in Area Panel 2 as well as a moveable program to initiate work in other areas of the city. In addition we will deliver the Incredible Years parenting course on a termly bases, targeting dads.
