Bangladesh Youth and Cultural Shomiti (BYCS) is a charitable organisation providing lifelong learning and community development activities for people, mainly but not exclusively of Bangladeshi descent, living in Leicester helping them to take advantage of the opportunities of society today.
The need for BYCS Parenting Support Services has been identified primarily as a result of BYCS's on-going observations on the needs of parents within the local community to more effectively support their children's learning and/or engage in learning themselves.
The project aims to deliver a range of services to parents with underachieving children between the ages of 5-14 yrs. BYCS will help parents to develop skills to support their children effectively and access existing services:
The project offers:
- The opportunity to achieve effective parenting skills (behaviour management & family time).
- Introduction to the Local education System - how it works, how children are taught and the outcomes for children.
- Learning needs assessment with individual action plan for parents to develop effective support for their children.
- Support at home via learning materials provided by BYCS according to age requirement: e.g., wipe away boards, arts and crafts etc…
- Mock learning situations.
- Internet taster sessions to help children accessing website for learning e.g. BBC/ Schools
The parents engaged by the project lack in basic skills to be effectively involved in their children's education. The project aims to engage 150 children and 300 parents over 2 years.
The project addresses the Parenting Fund objective " Promote inclusion and equality by enabling the take up of existing services by disadvantaged, vulnerable,'hard to reach' and less well served communities". It also complements BYCS Programmes of Supplementary Education Service and Key Stage 2 Complementary Education Services for children aged 5 -14 and 8-11 respectively.
