We are a charity and social work agency providing individual social and therapeutic work for families whose members have suffered trauma and/or whose children may exhibit behaviour problems. We were founded more than 100 years ago. Single parents form the majority of our caseload.
We are using the Parenting Fund to extend our current programme for parents on self-esteem and parenting skills.
Included in the programme are:
- intergenerational "drop-in" sessions for cultural networking and the exchange of skills. Parenting and social work advice is available, and younger (isolated and unsupported single parents) are integrating with members of an established Caribbean elders' lunch and craft club
- parent and child coaching sessions (along the model of "Little Angels" TV series)
- training the trainers course for parents to become facilitators of parenting courses.
- some parents will move on from being recipients of the service to become helpers. This role change could improve self-confidence and provide a pathway to employment
- supportive networks will be developed in the multi-cultural local community. Strategies for parenting will be shared among neighbours
- family mediation and contact facilities for use by children to develop safe, satisfying and harmonious relationships with separated parents or parents in conflict.
A crèche is provided for parents on the programme.
We will be able to draw on the experience of sister Welcares from across London in developing our contact work. We are confident that the project will be of enormous benefit in helping children to sustain meaningful relationships with both parents.
