Our focus is providing support for vulnerable, socially excluded young women who are parents and experiencing emotional difficulties. We are offering counselling sessions and support to help them strengthen their parenting skills. The aim is for them to:
- Feel better about themselves
- Improve their self esteem and confidence
- Support them in changing their behaviour and relationships by helping them to address the negative influences on their lives.
Young mothers will experience reduced stress levels and be happier and more confident parents. The program provides specific parenting skills, guidance and information. It endeavours to change patterns of behaviour and break cycles of dysfunctional or abusive parenting. Assuming an average of 9 sessions per person, we will see between 30-40 young women per year.
Following an initial assessment the young women will be referred to YWCA services or external agencies. We provide an informal outreach service to other organisations, community groups, etc. in order to make counseling more accessible to our target group and to facilitate referrals.
The project is to provide 40 disengaged, vulnerable and socially excluded young mothers with:
- informal accredited learning opportunities and one to one support in order to improve educational and parenting skills
- confidence and motivation and, if appropriate, help them to identify further educational and employment opportunities
The project will target young women with low level or no qualifications, ethnic minorities and lone parents.
