The Turning Point Women's Centre works in the Braunstone area of Leicester and has a long and successful history of providing good quality services designed to meet the needs of local women and children. We run community education and family learning programmes, provide access to cultural and leisure opportunities and offer a range of services for children and young people. We are a charity and were set up in 1987.
The Parenting Fund grant is to further develop our peer education based 'REAL Project'. Our aim is to promote confident, positive parenting with families facing significant challenges using peer education and support.
This will be achieved by:
- Delivering an accessible programme of high quality parenting education and support to Leicester's most deprived communities
- Developing the skills and capacity of parents/carers to deliver the programme
- Encouraging and enabling participation by providing affordable childcare and paying a £20 training allowance to individuals claiming income support
- Continued engagement of the project consultant, who is also a qualified psychotherapist and has significant experience in working with children, couples and families
- Working in partnership with agencies supporting parents and carers
- Engaging with parents/carers through intensive community outreach
- Employing a Fathers' Engagement Worker to enhance the participation of fathers / male carers both as peer educators and group participants
- Recruiting and training young parents as parenting peer educators
- Running targeted groups for parents of teenagers
- Developing group work resources to support effective communication between couples and to support parents / carers in communicating more effectively with their children on sex and relationships
- Establishing peer facilitated support groups
