Our Round 2 project will be providing parenting courses locally covering Active Listening, Communication, Assertiveness, Anger management skills, Accredited Family First Aid and Diet Related Behaviour. We expect to support 270 parents:
- 140 mothers (20% ethnic minority)
- 60 victims of domestic violence (28% ethnic minority) including delivering courses to their children
- 60 homeless young people (some are pregnant)(16% fathers)
- 20 socially excluded groups eg families at risk of being evicted.
The courses will enable participants to be more confident and effective parents while giving absent fathers an opportunity to understand their children's needs.
Venues will include:- the Women's Centre, community centres, Fusebox (homeless drop in centre) WISH, primary schools in the most deprived neighbourhoods (including high ethnic minority populations).Parenting classes at primary schools will target parents of children before they move on to secondary education. The counselling service will be offered to parents to enable them to resolve relationship problems.
We will use a variety of methods to reach course participants:
- Flyers/posters
- Advertising in local newspapers (LET & Asian Image)
- Talking to headteachers of local primary schools
- Networking with partner agencies
- Promoting the project through interagency meetings
- Developing existing contacts with local agencies.
