Our project focuses on families where parents are experiencing mental health problems, alcohol or substance misuse or where domestic violence has occurred. In particular we plan to work with families where children and young people have been adversely affected by having to care for family members experiencing any of these problems. This group can be hidden because of the stigma and fear of the possible consequences of statutory services involvement.
We have recruited two family support workers. One has expertise in Mental Health work and the other in supporting substance and alcohol misusers.
For the mental health work we are taking a whole family approach that supports Young Carers in their caring role and the parent. Based in Hartcliffe, an area of high deprivation, our worker will, in addition to family support work, raise awareness of the issues with statutory bodies and professionals.
Our second worker works with Parent Carers who have a caring responsibility for a child with a disability or life threatening illness. Support will be from the point of diagnosis.
- 1:1 intensive support service
- Individual casework/family work
- Advocacy
- Advice and information service
- Training and group work/activities for Parent Carers, YC's and parents.
