We are using the Parenting Fund to improve the knowledge, confidence and parenting skills of parents of children, young people and adults with autistic spectrum disorder living in Southwark. Reaching isolated parents such as those from minority ethnic groups, fathers and single parents is a key focus.
In workshops across Southwark parents will hear experts speaking on a range of issues such as bullying, sexuality, and social skills. These will empower parents by strengthening their knowledge of their child's condition and developing the skills they need to enable their children to live rewarding lives. We will run some of the workshops especially for parents from specific minority groups using interpreters if necessary.
We will tell parents about the autism specific services available to them and their children through a signposting pack, one to one support, a telephone helpline and parent groups. Collection of data from parents referred to the service will enable project workers to identify parent support needs. Parents will also be offered training in self advocacy and supporting other parents from their community.
