We want to improve the knowledge, confidence and parenting skills of parents of children, young people and adults with autistic spectrum disorder living in Greenwich using two project workers supported by the Parenting Fund. They are setting up workshops for parents to hear experts speaking on a range of parenting issues such as bullying, sexuality, and social skills training. The workshops will be designed to enhance skills and empower parents, enabling them to understand their child's condition and help them to develop the skills they need for their children to live rewarding lives. Some of the workshops will be run for parents from specific minority and BME communities. Whenever possible we will use interpreters at such meetings.
Through our work we expect to make people more aware of the autism specific services available to them and their children by using a signposting pack, one to one support, a telephone helpline and parent support groups. Parents will also be offered training in self advocacy and in supporting other parents. This way we hope to succeed in reaching isolated parents who are not included through any traditional referral process.
