We are taking on a project worker to work with the parents and carers of children and young people aged 0-19 with a diagnosis of autistic spectrum disorder living in Croydon. Through our work we expect to make people more aware of the autism specific services available to them and their children by using a signposting pack, one to one support, a telephone helpline, workshops and parent support groups. Parents will also be offered training in self advocacy and in supporting other parents. The workshops will be designed to enhance skills and empower parents, enabling them to understand their child's condition and help them to develop the skills they need for their children to live rewarding lives. Reaching isolated parents such as those from minority ethnic groups, fathers and single parents is a key focus. Some of the workshops will be run for parents from specific minority and BME communities. Whenever possible we will use interpreters at such meetings.
