Family Learning through Football is an innovative, exciting and engaging way to attract families into the learning environment. Using football, the SAFC (Sunderland Association Football Club) brand and the incentives attached to a Football Club, Family Learning through Football is designed to attract:
- Families that may not engage with other agencies
- Families who are particularly hard to reach (those from particularly disadvantaged wards where they may envisage barriers to the provision and those with medical conditions)
This 10 week programme will be run as outreach in the local community or at the Centre of Light and aims to:
- Offer a safe environment for families to explore values, beliefs and attitudes
- Break down barriers and build relationships and communication between parents and their children, and between other agencies
- Empower families with knowledge to make informed choices on issues that affect them
- Build skills, including social interaction
- Remove barriers to enable families to make a positive contribution and achieve success
- Work in partnership to enable the best provision for families
There are three current programmes: Family learning through Football Coaching; Family Learning through Football Fitness and Family Learning through Football Basics, all of which have specific aims and objectives.
This grant will also enable a further program to be developed around family values that would include:
- Rules and responsibilities
- Boundaries
- Behaviours and consequences of behaviours
- Staying in control and dealing with your feelings positively
- Respect, needs and caring for one another
- What is a family - differences and similarities
- What makes a good coach - how this relates to parenting
At the end of each program there will be celebration event at the Stadium of Light with player involvement and a road show of different agencies that can support the parents further.
