Parentline Plus provides holistic outreach support for parents. We recognise that parents need different support at different stages and we expect to reach more isolated parents in a variety of ways. Where necessary we will provide intensive tailored support individually or in groups. We expect to reach 3,920 parents in South Tyneside over the life of the project by providing a mix of locally based support reinforced by local media work which gets the message through to many more parents. Advertising our national Helpline will also enable us to reach more parents.

Building on the successful formula we have developed in Newcastle we are working with statutory and voluntary service providers to target particularly vulnerable and excluded families in South Tyneside. Our project is working at a strategic level (building the capacity of working) and through direct support to parents using a flexible programme of outreach, courses, workshops, facilitated groups and individual support.

Parentline Plus's tried and tested parent support programme 'Parents Together' will be adapted to meet the needs of particular groups of parents to reduce isolation and enhance parenting skills. Activities will include informal sessions with groups of parents, taster workshops, drop ins and courses (accredited if appropriate). We will work with local projects including South Tyneside Women's Health Project, Children's Centres and Sure Starts, Apnha Ghar (an Asian women's support project) and Streetwise (a drug support project) to access vulnerable parents. We will target families from the BME community, fathers and asylum seekers / refugee groups.

In addition we provide a programme of workshops, groups and individual support for teenaged parents in partnership with The Cave and Tyne Dock. This will help young parents make informed decisions about pregnancies and support young people who may be considering early parenthood. We have extended our support for partners and families in prison visitors centres to post release support. We are offering up to four individual coaching support sessions for parents who would prefer this to group work.

In our work with South Tyneside Children's Trust, The Social Inclusion Unit, Children's Centres, YOTs and YIPs and Sure Starts we contribute to integrated packages of parent support to help prevent or lessen anti social behaviour and tackle issues around school exclusion. We want the use of services for parents to be experienced as positive, accessible and non stigmatising
