Working in partnership with other agencies, Ormiston projects in Peterborough are already providing a range of services for young parents. These include drop-in sessions, support for young fathers and a citywide summer learning program.
The Parenting Fund grant is to develop new strands of work, building on existing partnerships and good practice. We have identified specific individuals and groups of young parents who slip through the net, and who have needs which currently are not being met. These include: Teenage parents who are known by the designated Health Visitor for Teenage Parents to be in need of additional support, but are not accessing any of the range of support services in the City; Teenage parents lacking the self confidence and self esteem to join informal support groups and Teenage parents not accessing the local NACRO range of accredited learning programs. Following referral by other agencies, Ormiston's outreach worker is working on a one to one basis with young parents, offering a support package to improve emotional well being by increasing self esteem and confidence, helping marginalised young parents to gain access to other support services.
The individual support package provides a care plan which recognises the needs of each Young Parent and child and respects their own culture and environment. It works within the family context and dynamics, seeking, where appropriate, to involve fathers and grandparents.
Additionally, the project is to make links with Ormiston's Teenage Parents Project based in Wisbech, to develop the Peer Mentoring Project in Peterborough.
