The project employs a Together Family Learning tutor and a Skills for Life tutor to deliver 10 week Time Together Family Learning programmes to teenage parent units, young offender teams (particularly young fathers) and groups working with young parents. We have found that teenage parents find it difficult to talk, sing and play with their children. Our programmes build their confidence and lead to stronger relationships between young parents and their young children. During the programme parenting issues are discussed while participants share and receive support from their peers and tutors. We have found that the programmes motivate parents in addressing their learning needs while offering support with literacy and other communication skills. We also offer two-day training to Early Years practitioners in Newcastle and South Tyneside so that the programme can be sustained after the funding has expired.
