North Staffs Mind will establish a small team to focus solely on parental support through: Positive Parenting Programmes; individual counselling for mental distress and parenting skills development (anger management/nutritional information). The service will be targeted at identified areas with limited/absent parental support to increase service accessibility e.g. health centres/children centres and other agency premises. Services will be specifically aimed at particular groups as well as more general groups through Positive Parenting Groups for BME (black minority ethnic) clients or young parents. We will identify potential populations by linking with other agencies and existing groups e.g. Gingerbread Teenage Parent Support Service and a local afro-Caribbean support group. There is a strong network within the city of lesbian, gay and bi-sexual services and this may be an area where we could offer parenting support. The team will be supported in their work by our attached social worker who can offer advice on child protection issues, offer family interventions and ease access into statutory services where this is needed. We will be working in close collaboration with an NHS Children's Psychology Team with whom we have established close partnership arrangements over the last 3 years and with the local Children and Families Team (Social Services). We anticipate offering services to 250 individual parents over the 2 years and to have seen 150 parents in parenting groups.
