The African Community Partnership is a voluntary organisation representing everyone who defines themselves as being of African origin. Our main aim is to improve the quality of life through the advancement of education, well-being and skills. We have been in operation since 2003.
Our Parenting Fund project will provide a Family Support team to work with the African Community and those who support them on aspects of parenting. Covering South East London the service will be designed around the cultural needs and issues facing this community and complement mainstream services. It aims to break down barriers to families accessing support.
The Family Support team will consist of a specialist Parent Worker and Outreach/Link Worker and will:
- provide direct support to other Black Minority Ethnic (BME)organisations working with African families by focussing on mental health and emotional well-being
- enable parents/carers to access parenting groups and workshops
- use its knowledge of the community to improve other services' understanding of the needs of BME parents and families
- provide training and capacity building that will enable local front line staff at voluntary and statutory services to improve their response to the difficulties and stresses faced by BME families and parents
- provide community based workshops on the key parenting issues confronting the target group.
