Building on the work of Parents Together activities in Greenwich and Barking and Dagenham this proposal is to work with 200 parents in Hackney:
- In accordance with the respect agenda - increase the skills and confidence of parents (including parents of teenagers) who are at risk of social exclusion
- Provide creative ways to engage hard to reach parents in a lifelong learning, with a particular focus on working with teenage parents
Delivered by parents, this project connects with parents via open sessions in partnership with schools and the Early Years Service utilising LifeLine's 'Getting Ready' series. These accessible and non threatening workshops cover issues parents and children face in the key transitional phases of starting school and moving from primary to secondary school.
These sessions are offered to all parents with children moving into identified schools, thus reducing the stigma of parents attending parenting support provision. From these sessions, parents are able to access a range of additional services from the following menu:
- Parent workshops covering issues such as: understanding their child's needs; discipline; dealing with teachers/school and helping with homework
- Dads sessions to encourage involvement of fathers in their child's education
- Family relationship workshops and support sessions for couple facing relationship difficulties
- 'Skills for Life' and ESOL courses tackling gaps in the parents' basic skills education with signposting to vocational training
- Peer mentoring opportunities
Activities will take place in schools where there are already established links and other community venues.
