We are developing, piloting and evaluating an eight session course for parents of teenagers. It will provide families with protective factors aimed at reducing antisocial and risk taking behaviours, particularly in relation to drug and alcohol use. We are also setting up a model of good practice that can be duplicated throughout Birmingham and nationally via other Life Education Trusts. This will strengthen community involvement, liaison with other agencies, referrals, and recruitment and retention for each course.
For our programme we will: :
- Work with Aquarius (alcohol counselling and education agency) and Drug Concern to produce and deliver 2 sessions on drug and alcohol knowledge and education
- Produce course resources e.g. participant handbooks, training and delivery manuals, diaries and DVD clips in partnership with theatre in education specialists, parents and young people
- Deliver 22 courses in Erdington, Ladywood and Hodge Hill
- Run an accreditation scheme for course parents, facilitators and community champions through the OCN via Birmingham College
- Develop and run a course for facilitators to deliver the programme
- Recruit and train community champions from other agencies to provide one to one support for parents after the course has finished
To manage and monitor the project we are:
- Setting up a steering group drawn from local agencies, stakeholders and parents.
- Consulting parents of teenagers about their specific needs and requirements through focus groups
