Sargent Cancer Care for Children is a charity offering practical support to families when a child has been diagnosed with a cancer related illness. Our services are available in South Wales and the South West of England and Northern Ireland. We were set up in 1968.
We are using the Parenting Fund to recruit a Family Support Worker in the Cornwall region who will:
- meet individual family needs
- provide social, emotional and practical help to children and young people with cancer and their families
- help look after the needs of the brothers and sisters
- provide additional support to parents
- seek to provide practical help solutions for the family
- respond swiftly at times of crisis.
In addition to the services above, the Family Support Worker will organise, where practicable, activity groups where the sick child or young person, their siblings and parents can meet up with other families going through the same experience. The Family Support worker will strive to provide friendly meetings with a range of activities so that the whole family can feel involved and supported.
The many benefits of the family support service are set out below.
For the child or young person:
- opportunities to have positive experiences through activities inside and outside the home
- an opportunity to focus on non-medical issues
- support from a non family member

For the parents:

- respite from caring for the sick child or young person
- help with domestic chores
- assistance with other children such as collection from school, homework supervision

For the siblings:
- someone to focus on the sibling while the parents are busy with the sick child or young person
- activities for siblings both inside and away from the home
- help with homework or related issues
