This is a support service for families of disabled children who display challenging behaviour including children with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), autistic spectrum disorders, learning or speech and language disorders or no specific diagnosis.
We will:
- enable parents to develop networks for mutual support
- train parents so that they acquire skill and confidence in managing their child's behaviour
- provide support to siblings
The service will provide:
- individual telephone and face to face support for parents offering advice, information and advocacy
- a monthly Saturday afternoon support group enabling parents to meet one another
These parents are often isolated and stressed. They may be blamed for their children's behaviour by other parents, members of the public and some professionals. Sharing their experiences with others helps develop coping strategies. These children and their siblings do not have the same play opportunities as other children. Family outings tend to be nightmarish and parents often give up. Trained play workers will enable safe play, give siblings some space and demonstrate good, confident behaviour management strategies.
