We are using the fund for our Speakeasy programme in Hackney. Speakeasy provides parents with education, information and support to enable them to take on the role of sex educators and provide sex education in the home. In a group setting, parents develop their own knowledge and skills in relation to sexual health. Speakeasy is targeted in areas of multiple deprivation and high teenage pregnancy rates.
The aim of this work is to change the climate around sex and relationships education in the home. Speakeasy strengthens communication within the family; both parent to child and adult to adult - on what can be an embarrassing topic. As a result, young people will develop a more positive, discerning approach to sex and relationships so reducing risk taking behaviour and poor health outcomes as well as teenage pregnancy.
The Parenting Fund grant is to further the work of Speakeasy with 20% of the work targeting Fathers, and at least 50% of the total numbers reached being from BME families. In parallel with the direct parent work, FPA will also train parenting professionals to build local capacity for further delivery of parent courses.
