The project aims are:
- To improve services for parents who are socially excluded due to mental illness
- Strengthen the support network for parents with mental ill health by linking hospital and community services thus reducing isolation
- Supporting parents to meet their child's needs and facilitating secure attachments for parents with new babies
The project operates from the Huddlestone Centre where the FWA Newpin service is already based. The community base provides a more family/friendly environment, rather than the usual hospital setting. The consultant psychiatrist and her team at the Hommerton Hospital have been looking at ways to move their outpatient services into the community. The Huddlestone Centre has the space to run play and other child centred activities as well as providing rooms for outpatient appointments to take place. Funding from the parenting fund is to provide drop in facilities for parents and their children as well as crèches and other activities running alongside the psychiatric outpatient clinics.
We have employed a Family Support Coordinator who is to work closely with the Psychiatric team and will manage an outreach home visiting service. The home visiting will be done by 2 part time Family Support Workers who offer practical and emotional help to parents in their own homes.
