Derman provides parenting support to Kurdish, Turkish and Cypriot Turkish parents in Hackney. For people in these communities, parenting issues are particularly complex and parents experience multiple disadvantages.
The project provides parents with practical and emotional support, information and education to build their skills, knowledge and confidence and enable them to provide a nurturing family environment where children and parents can achieve their full potential.
We are set to run:
- Parenting support groups covering issues including:
- Parenting strategies
- The British system and how to navigate through it
- Health issues (e.g. healthy eating, exercise and leisure activities for children and parents together)
- Working with the concept of discipline, especially with very young children
- Sharing experiences and ideas
- Working with lowered expectations because of disability or gender
- Individual casework to assist parents in using existing services and facilities (e.g. local leisure facilities, social services, health, and other mainstream services.)
- Fathers Groups are to work with fathers to encourage positive parenting and fathers' closer involvement in the upbringing of their children.
- Workshops are to be held for local professionals to improve their understanding of parenting issues in the chosen communities.
- Specific work with parents and families where there are mental health problems - including individual casework, and community development (raising awareness within the wider community). This work will be done in close liaison with the Child and Family Consultation Unit in Hackney.
- Producing supporting material in Turkish (a parent pack).
